How to set the USN Journal Size Back to 128 MB

After you have applied the 811370 hotfix- Issues That Are Fixed in the Post-Service Pack 3 Release of Ntfrs.exe, the Windows server may not have sufficient free space (at lease 512 MB) to contain the journal file, the USN Journal cannot initialize. Therefore, you may have FRS issue in DFS replica members or domain controllers that are hosting a SYSVOL replica set.

To set the USN Journal size back to 128 MB, before you restart FRS, and after you have applied the 811370 hotfix, follow these steps:

1.

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

2.

Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters

3.

Look in the Name column. If the Ntfs Journal size in MB entry does not exist, follow these steps to create it:

a.

Click the Parameters subkey. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

b.

Type Ntfs Journal size in MB, and then press ENTER.

4.

Double-click the Ntfs Journal size in MB entry.

5.

In the Value box, type 128, click Decimal under Base, and then click OK.

6.

Quit Registry Editor.

7.

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

8.

In Services, right-click File Replication, and then click Start.

9.

Restart your computer.
