Case Study - Installation of Routing and Remote Access service failed because: Access is denied. (80070005)

Situation: Running Server 2003 Standard Edition. Have not yet installed SP1. When attempting to configure RRAS with Administrator and Domain Admin privileges, you may receive this message "Installation of Routing and Remote Access service failed because: Access is denied. (80070005)"

Cause: In most cases, error 80070005 is permission issue.

Resolution:

1. On the RRAS server, run dcomcnfg /OK.
2. Expand the Component Services>Computers.
3. Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.
4. On the Default Properties tab, make sure the Default Authentication Level to
Connect.
5. Select the COM Security tab.
6. Click Edit Default.
7. Under Default Security, click Add.

9. Enter "Administrators" in the box and click OK.
10. Check "Allow" for both Local Access and Remote Access under Permission for Administrators.
10. Press OK, OK, and OK.
11. Restart your computer.
