How to setup DNS Forwarders

To ensure that all DNS entries are correctly sent to your ISP DNS server, you must setup DNS forwarders correctly. Note: You can only configure DNS forwarders if no root zone entry is present.

To configure forwarders on the DNS server:

1.

Start the DNS Management console.

2.

Right-click the name of the server, and then click Properties.

3.

On the Forwarders tab, click to select the Enable Forwarders check box.

4.

Type the appropriate IP addresses for the DNS servers that may be accepting forwarded requests from this DNS server. The list reads top-down in order, so place a preferred DNS server at the top of the list.

5.

Click OK to accept the changes.

Note: Based on Microsoft FAQs, you don't need to configure forwarders in DNS.  By default, Windows 2000 DNS uses the root hint servers on the Internet; however, you can configure forwarders to send DNS queries directly to your ISP's DNS server or other DNS servers. Most of the time, when you configure forwarders, DNS performance and efficiency increases, but this configuration can also introduce a point of failure if the forwarding DNS server is experiencing problems. The root hint server can provide a level of redundancy in exchange for slightly increased DNS traffic on your Internet connection. Windows Server 2003 DNS will query root hints servers if it cannot query the forwarders.
