Overview of Exchange Intelligent Message Filter

Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter (IMF) provides server-side message filtering, heuristics-based message analysis, and helps companies reduce the amount of spam. The IMFcan accurately assess the probability that an incoming e-mail message is either a legitimate message or unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE).

The first version of Intelligent Message Filter was a stand-alone tool, and is no longer supported. Version 2 of the IMF is installed automatically with Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

The Intelligent Message Filter should be installed on an e-mail servers known as gateway servers to filter incoming Internet e-mail messages, for example, if you have Front-end and Back-end Exchange servers, you should enable IMF in the Font-end Exchange server. For a small business which has just one Exchange, enabling IMF will be very help too.

To filter UCE effectively, you must deploy Intelligent Message Filter. When configuring Message Filter, you can filter these messages by deleting, archiving, or rejecting them, or moving them to a user's Junk E-mail folder on a mailbox store.
