How to copy files from HVD to VHDX

Q: Can we copy the files from VHD to a newly created VHDX? If so, what if the VHD is a C:\ drive would it work as well to just copy the content?

A: If the VHD file is a system drive, you can use "Bare metal recovery" of "windows server backup" .

Please refer to following steps:

1. in host , add a new passthrough disk ("disk A",a VHD disk, it should be large enough for the backup image ) then attach it to the VM you want to backup .

2. in VM , select "Bare metal recovery" to backup the VM (exclude the passthrough disk)

3. after the backup detach the "disk A" in VM settings

4. create a new Virtual Machine with a VHDX file ( i created a dynamic VHDX same size as the VHD you want to "copy" , in my test environment)

5. attach the "disk A" to the new VM

6. boot it from 2012R2 ISO , select "repair your computer"

7.then "Troubleshoot" --> "System image" --> "Use the latest available system image" (the backup information should be detected here) --> "next" --> "next" -->"finish"

After completing this then restart the VM , you may achieve the "copy".

For the "passthrough disk" and "Bare metal Recovery" please refer to the following links :
