Windows Hyper-V "Limited Connectivity"

Windows Hyper-V "Unidentified Network"

Situation: After installing a guest VM in Windows 2008 Hyper-V, the network connection may display "Limited Connectivity" or "Unidentified Network". The ipconfig shows he IP address is 169.254.x.x.

Cause: the VM Network Adapter doesn't setup correctly.

Case 1: The Virtual Network was setup Private virtual machine network or Internal only. The correct way should be setup to use External (see below) so that it can receive an IP address from the DHCP.

Case 2: The computer has two NICs. The cable is connected to the Adapter #2 while the Network Adapter in the VM settings was using the Adapter #1. To change the network adapter, click settings in the right pan of the Hyper-v and highlight Network Adapter. Then change the adapter in the Network
