What are ESP and AH

IPsec consists of two sub-protocols: Encapsulated Security Payload (ESP) and Authentication Header (AH).

ESP and AH gives authentication, integrity, confidentiality protecting against data tampering. ESP provides all encryption services in IPSec while AH provides optional anti-replay protection, which protects against unauthorized retransmission of packets. For added protection, in certain cases, AH and ESP can be used together.

For the troubleshooting tip, if standard algorithms such as SHA and MD5 don’t match on both sites, the payload is not touched and IPSec will reject the packets.
