How to disable Windows 10 update

In some cases, you may want to disable Windows 10 updates. This article shows how to do so.

Resolution 1: Stop Windows Update Service

Resolution 2. Configure the Group Policy Editor

Resolution 3: Disable Windows Updates Using Registry

Resolution 4: Disable Windows update in Scheduler

Resolution 5: Block Windows update FQNS

Resolution 6: Pause the update

Resolution 1: Stop Windows Update Service

•Type services in the Search bar

* Click on Services

* Double click on Windows Update

•Change the Startup type to Disabled

•Click OK to save the settings

•Restart the computer

Resolution 2. Configure the Group Policy Editor

•Type Group Policy in the Search Bar

•Click on Edit Group Policy

•Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.

* Double-click Configure Automatic Updates.

* Check Disabled in Configured Automatic Updates and click Apply to save the settings

•The Windows Update state shows Disabled.

•Restart the computer. 

Resolution 3: Disable Windows Updates Using Registry

•Type regedit in the Search bar.

•Double click to run Registry.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate>AU

•Double click on NoAutoUpdate Change its value to 2

•Click o to save the settings and restart the computer

•Note: If you don’t see WindowsUpdate and AU, you may add them by yourself.

Resolution 4: Disable Windows update in Scheduler.

•Type scheduler in Search Bar.

•Double click on Task Scheduler.

  • Navigate to Task Scheduler Library>Microsoft>WindowsUpdate

* Right click on the Scheduled Start to disable it.

Resolution 5: Block Windows update FQNS

 * Use Notepad run as admin to open hosts file from C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

•Make all Microsoft update services’ FQNS

update.microsoft.com

windowsupdate.microsoft.com

windowsupdate.com

download.windowsupdate.com

point to 127.0.0.1 IP address.

* Save the hosts

Or block below websites from your firewall.

http://stats.microsoft.com https://stats.microsoft.com

Resolution 6: Pause the update

•This is not real resolution, but you can pause the update for a while.

•Go to Settings>Update & Security

•If click on Pause updates for 7 more days, the Update status shows Resume updates

* You can also click on Advanced options

* If clicking on Pause updates, you will have more options.
