Case Study - Can't establish VPN because the private NIC is disabled

Situation: one of MCSE candidates setup a VPN/NAT server on a server 2003 with two NICs. There are not other computers in the LAN. But he could not make the VPN work. He received Error 800 - Unable to establish the VPN connection when trying to connect to the VPN server.

Troubleshooting:

1. No firewall blocks the VPN.

2. No inbound filtering blocks the VPN.

3. The VPN service was enabled under NAT.

4. The problem is that he assigned private IP under NAT (see picture) while disabled the private NIC.

Workaround:

he may have two options to make the VPN work.

1. Re-assign IP 127.0.0.1 to the private NIC (see picture) even the private is disabled.

2. Just enable the private NIC.
