How to run Backup Exec to restore a deleted or moved mailbox in Exchange

In a case you have deleted a mailbox or removed the mailbox to different Exchange storage, you still can restore the mailbox on the original Exchange server. In this example, we have move all users from Exchange 2003 to 2010. One of users need to restore his emails back to Exchange 2003. We use Symantec Backup Exec 11D to restore the mailbox.

1. In the Exchange 2003 server you want to restore the mailbox, create a mailbox for restore. In our case, since all mailboxes have been moved to Exchange 2010, we also assign the restore user as domain admin and Exchange Full Administrator (Note: Assign  Exchange Full Administrator to a user in Exchange 2003, open Exchange System Manager. Right click on the Exchange OU and select Delegate Control. Then follow the instruction to finish it).

2. Create a restore folder in the local drive.

3. It is better to duplicate the backup to a local drive to restore mailbox because it is faster and easy to troubleshoot. To do that, Run Symantec Backup Exec and select File>New>Duplicate Backup Sets Job.

&

4. In the New Job to Duplicate Backup Sets, check Duplicate existing backup sets and click OK to continue. Then follow the instruction to duplicate teh backup to the fodler you just created.

5. After duplicating the backup to a local drive, open the Devices in the Backup Exec. Right click on the Media Label and select Restore Data.

;

6. In the Restore Job Properties, select Microsoft Exchange Redirection. Check Redirect Exchange sets and enter the Exchange server name in Restore to server. Check the Redirect mailboxes or public folder and enter the mailbox you created for restoration in the Restore to mailbox. Note: Server logon account and Mailbox logon account is besadmin in our case. It could be restore account since we have assigned it as Exchange administrator.

7. Click Run Now to start the restoration. after the restoration, logon restore account to check the restored emails.
