How to migrate SBS 2003 to Windows 2008 R2

Note: in this example, we don’t have Exchange, SQL and Proxy server running on the SBS 2003. We just want to migrate the SBS domain Controller to a new server running on Windows 2008 R2.

1. Prepare for Windows SBS 2003 to Windows 2008 migration

2. Install Windows Server 2008 R2 and join to the SBS domain. Please refer to this link:

3. Promote the New Windows 2008 R2 as Domain Controller. Refer to this link: How to migrate one DC to another 

4. Verify DNS in the Windows 2008 R2 DC work fine or create a DNS if it doesn’t have one. Refer to this DNS how to

5. Export and import DHCP from the SBS. Refer to this link: Export/import DHCP scope 

6. Demote and remove the Source Server from the network to finish Windows SBS 2008 migration. Refer to this link: How to migrate one DC to another

7. Disable DNS and DHCP server on Windows SBS 2008 migration.

8. Move any data the users will need to access in the SBS to teh new windows 2008 R2.

9. Check Event Viewer for any errors or run dcdiag and netdiag to check any errors.
