Recover Mailbox from backup to an Exchange 2003 SP1
You may have a situation that the user account is deleted from Active
Directory or if the Exchange attributes are removed from the user account,
and the mailbox in the Exchange store was not reconnected or was purged.
It is possible to restore a mailbox from backup to an Exchange Server 2003
SP1 without down time (note: it must be Exchange 2003 SP1 or above). This
article assumes you have a good Exchange backup and you use NTBackup to back
up the Exchange. 1.
Create Recovery Storage Group.
4) You should have Recovery Storage Group un the server.

Prepare for restoring the backup to Recovery Storage Group only (not restore it to First Storage Group) 1) Run Exchange System Manager. 2) Navigate to Server>Servaername>First Storage Group, and right-click on it. Select Properties. 3) Click on Database tab. Make sure Exchange databse is c:\Program Files\Exchsrv\mdbdata\priv1.edb and "This database can be overwritten by a restore" is unchecked. 4) Right-Click on Recovery Storage Group and select Properties. 5) Make sure Exchange database is c:\Program Files\Exchsrv\Recovery Storage Group\priv1.edb and "This database can be overwritten by a restore" is checked. 3. Restore Exchange Mailboxes from the Backup 1) When restoring the Exchange Backup using NTBackup,

Once the restore completes ensure that you have a C:\Temp\Recovery Storage
Group folder. 3)
Also ensure that it has a file called restore.env which is at least 1kb or 2
kb in size. 4)
Make a copy of the C:\temp\Recovery Storage Group folder. 5)
Then open the command prompt and navigate to BIN folder.
Your command prompt should read as this
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\BIN> 6)
Then run the command eseutil /cc “C:\temp\Recovery Storage Group” 7)
It should complete successfully. 4.
Restore the mailbox to a new user 1) Run ADSIEdit.msc
2) When you have highlighted “Recovery Storage Group” on the right side you
would see “Mailbox Store (ExchSRV).” 3)
Right click this Mailbox Store (ExchSRV) and select “Properties”. 4)
On the Attribute editor locate “msExchRestore” and click on “Edit”.

Select the option “False” and click on “Ok”.
6) Do the same as the Properties of The Recovery Storage Group and setup msExchRestore to False.

Then open Active Directory Users and Computers. 8)
Create a user with the same name as the user for whom we are trying to
recover the mailbox. 9) Ensure that when you are creating a user you uncheck the option “Create an Exchange Mailbox”. 10)
Then open the Exchange System Manager. 11) Expand Administrative Groups > First Administrative Group > Servers > ExchSRV > Recovery Storage group > Mailbox Store (ExchSRV).

Right click this Mailbox Store (ExchSRV) and select “Mount Store”.

Then expand this Mailbox Store (ExchSRV) and select mailboxes.

You will see all mailboxes on the right side with a red cross.
15)
Select the mailbox for which we want to recover data and select the option
“Reconnect”
16)
Then reconnect the mailbox to the user account that you created.
17)
Then right click the Mailbox “USERNAME” and select and
“Exchange Tasks”.
18)
Click on next and select the option “Move Mailbox”..
19) If it will be moved in the same administrative group,
20) Make sure you move the mailbox from Recovery Storage Group to Fist Administrative Group.
5. How to import PST file to Outlook
Note: Also we can restore a mailbox store to the recovery storage group, use the Exmerge.exe tool to move the recovered mailbox data from the recovery storage group to the regular storage group.
