Procedures of
Installing Domain Controller in Remote Office over VPN/WAN
Installing a Domain Controller
over VPN or WAN is some different from the normal procedure in the LAN. This
article outlines the steps by step to create domain controller for a branch
office in a remote site.
-
Configuring the Network Settings – assign the main office DNS as
Preferred DNS.
-
Verifying Name Resolution on the New Server – ping each other by FQDN.
-
Adding a Delegation for the Zone – add the remote office server you
plan to install DC on it.
-
Installing Active Directory – use
dcpromo.
-
Re-Configuring the office's DNS
- use itself as its preferred DNS server and main office DNS as its
alternate DNS server.
-
Configuring the DNS servers to forward requests
– add the IP addresses of the DNS servers from the main office.
Note: 1.
You may want to Install Active Directory in the hub site by using the normal
Dcpromo method, and then ship the installed domain controller to the remote
site.
2. It is better to install WINS
servers on each location for name resolution.
